Plan before you arrive
Write down what you need from the horse and what has not worked for you before. Share this with your trainer and the seller.
Watch the horse being caught, groomed, saddled and warmed up. These simple moments can tell you as much as the ride.
Ride the work you do at home
Test the things that matter in your normal week. That may include transitions, combinations, hacking, mounting or riding in a new area.
You do not need to prove how much the horse can do. You need to learn how the two of you communicate.
See the horse twice if you can
Travel and excitement can affect your first impression. A second visit gives you time to think and compare notes with your trainer.
